Pre- and Post-Reunion News

March 1, 2018 Record label TBTCI (Twitter, Facebook, Blog) releases the digital album "Lovelife: A Homage to Lush" with 18 covers of Lush songs by 18 different artists!

Miki on Twitter: "CRIKEY O'REILLY and WOW! This is MENTAL!!! What an honour to have these lovely folk covering our lil ol' Lush songs. Genuinely, I'm blown away. Mxxx"

Emma on Twitter: "Lovely Lush tribute album by some great bands… Very flattered! Thanks to all involved. x"

March 1, 2018 Japanese musician Cornelius releases a new music video for the song "The Spell of a Vanishing Loveliness" featuring Miki's lyrics and vocals, from his 2017 album "Mellow Waves". See the July 21, 2017 entry below for more details.
February 22, 2018 While responding to a question on Twitter (screen, link) about the possibility of another Lush reunion, Miki reveals there will be new music from her sometime in the future!

"I'm genuinely sorry but it's just not going to happen. I have been bitten by the bug, though, and I promise there will be some music from me at some point. Not the same as Lush re-reforming, I know, but (hopefully) better than a slap with a wet fish!"

December 8, 2017 Phil participates in a panel discussion at the book launch for "C86 & All That" at Rough Trade East, and reads excerpts from his 1986 diary.
August 8, 2017 Emma re-joins Twitter, with a new account, and is very active on it. Unfortunately her old account was deleted so all the posts from the reunion are gone.
July 21, 2017 A distant cousin of Miki, Japanese musician Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada) releases "Mellow Waves" his first new album in 11 years. Miki wrote the lyrics for the song "The Spell of a Vanishing Loveliness" and sings vocals on it.
Press:  Japan Times   Pitchfork   Billboard
The entire album can be streamed ahead of its release on NPR Music website's First Listen
The digital album can be purchased on iTunes and Amazon
CD can be pre-ordered on Amazon US.

Sep. 28, 2015

August 7, 2016 Miki joins Twitter, after avoiding social media for many years. She initialy joined as a way to report customer service issues but was quickly discovered by fans, who she called her "little band of followers." She tweets only ocasionaly, but responds to most tweets.
February 11, 2016 Miki participates in an in-depth interview organized by Soundstage Events at The Others in Stoke, Newington. This took place after the reunion was announced but before any of the reunion shows. She does discuss the reunion at the end of the interview.
February 8, 2016 Miki participates in a panel discussion on songwriting at UCA's Stepping Out Music Conference, together with Viv Albertine, Lucy O'Brien and Femme.
October 30, 2015 BBC 4 broadcasts the documentary "Girl in a Band: Tales from the Rock 'n' Roll Front Line" which includes a fantastic interview with Miki at 49 minutes.

https://youtu.be/v1vrDc2yLyE?t=49m15s  (entire documentary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpsdhC0r914 (Miki interview portion)

Miki's first TV broadcast interview in many years, recorded before the reunion was announced but aired after the accouncement.

The entries below give a sence of the inactive years between 1998--when Lush first disbanded--and the 2016 reunion, with very few note-worthy events each year.
September 22, 2015 Ola's Kool Kitchen radio show airs a truly interesting interview with Phil. Its in three parts and he discusses Lush in the second part.
June 13, 2015 Miki participates in a discussion of fanzines in Clerkenwell, London, part of the Alternative Marga Carta Festival [PDF]
June 2015 Art Decades magazine features a superb 20 page tribute to Lush, including new in-depth interviews with Miki and Emma. Available in print at  Amazon US or UK, or view it here.
May 7, 2015 Miki on stage again, together with Phil and The Jesus and Mary Chain, this time at the Roundhouse in London - the same venue where it turns out Lush will perform exactly one year later!

April 29, 2015 Under the Radar publishes an interview with Emma and Miki on "The 1994 Album Split"
April 28, 2015 Under the Radar publishes an interview with Emma and Miki on "The 1996 Album Lovelife and the Last Days of the Band"

Back in 2007, Under the Radar published Miki's first interview in 10 years (see below), a big event at the time for Lush fans!

November 24 , 2014 Miki on stage together with Phil for the first time in 18 years, at the Troxy in London.

Miki sings Just Like Honey with The Jesus and Mary Chain, which Phil has been a member of for several years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLjq-n549D8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok43eTLEDQo

(Miki confirmed it was the 24th, not the 19th as labeled on the 3rd clip)

September 23, 2014 The ghostlifeghostlife blog publishes an extensive "Split 20th Anniversary" interview with Miki, Emma, AND Phil.

This is seriosuly one of the best Lush interviews I've ever seen, great questions and great answers!

July 7, 2014 Miki appears at a book reading for David Quantick's book “Memoirs Of A Shoegazing Gentleman” published by Sonic Cathedral, at The Social in London. Phil and Emma are in attendance also.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H81yolUW_yY

22 minute video. Miki starts at 2:30, and between the book readings it turns into Miki's first on-camera interview in many years.

September 26, 2013 Miki and Emma attend the book launch for "Facing the Other Way: The Story of 4AD" (Amazon US, UK) at Rough Trade East.

Audio of the 45 minute panel discussion with audience Q&A can be heard on the BookD Podcast. Miki speaks only a few times. The book's Facebook page has some great photos from the event, see if you can spot Miki and Emma.

June 13, 2013 Miki participates in a discussion of the album Parallel Lines by Blondie with Lucy O'Brien on June 13, 2013 at 7:00 pm in London, for Rock's Back Pages Albums Club at The Idler Academy. No audio or video of the event is known to exist.
May 18, 2013 The Verge (a US technology website, of all things!) publishes a wonderful look back at Spooky by Laura June.
May 10, 2013 Miki appears on stage with the band Hard Skin to sing "You Still Here?" As far as I know this is the first time Miki sang publicly since Lush!

https://youtu.be/4NdWs1Xxotk?t=3m40s

The introduction to Miki starts at 3:40. She's holding the lyrics and a band member tells her "Nevermind the lyrics, just swear!" In fact Miki didn't tell her mom about this video because of the swearing! But it turns out her mom loved it.

See the entry below for Miki's comments on recording the song and the significance of this band for Lush fans.

March 4, 2013 The punk band Hard Skin releases a new album "Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear" which includes guest vocals by Miki Berenyi on track 3, "You Still Here?".

iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/you-still-here-feat.-miki/id593776278?i=593776777
Amazon: http://amzn.com/B00B1BQ9UC

A note from Miki when she recorded the vocals, back in the summer of 2012:

Just wanted to let you know that I did a vocal on a rather unlikely recording the other day. One of the last things Chris played drums on was Hard Skin - a punk band. They've just done a record and have a 'female' version with women singing, and I'm one of them. It was very hilarious - and I had a very good time singing it, but it's about as far away from Lush as you could possibly get (sort of) and has a hell of a lot of swearing on it!

August 11, 2012 Novelist Scott Heim (Mysterious Skin) has released an ongoing series of e-books "The First Time I Heard..." and three of the volumes include essays by the members of Lush:

Part IV: The First Time I Heard The Smiths (Miki Berenyi)  released August 7, 2012  Amazon Kindle  Apple iTunes
Part III: The First Time I Heard David Bowie (Phil King)  released July 2, 2012  Amazon Kindle   Apple iTunes
Part I: The First Time I Heard Joy Division / New Order (Emma Anderson)  released June 12, 2012   Amazon Kindle  Apple iTunes

(Please note these links are for the US Amazon/Apple stores)

I’ve read the essays and they are all absolutely brilliant (no exaggeration). I highly recommend all three e-books.

June 29, 2012 The Concequence of Sound website publishes a brand new in-depth interview with Emma Anderson.
April 28, 2012 The Concequence of Sound website publishes a look back at Lovelife on its 16th anniversary.
March 23, 2011 Radio station RRR 102.7 FM in Melbourne airs an interview with Miki and Emma (recorded March 10th) on the 'The Golden Age of Piracy' program's "Formative Five" segment, where they discuss 5 songs that influenced their music. This was Miki's first radio interview in 15 years!
For a brief time the interview can be heard on the RiSH Publicity website (look for the "RiSH Radio streaming player on the right side of the page).
August 30, 2010 The Delusions of Adequacy website has published an interview with Seinking Ships which includes several comments from Miki.
June 8, 2010 The Seinking Ships long-awaited debut LP 'Museum Quality Capture' with 3 tracks featuring the vocals of Miki Berenyi, is released today by S-Curve Records. The CD can be previewed and ordered on Amazon and one of the tracks with Miki is available as a free MP3 download: http://bit.ly/9Cr6YI
May 16, 2010 The VPME Music Blog has published a new interview with Emma, Miki and STEVE, on the 20th anniversary of the Mad Love EP.
April 2, 2010 The Quietus, a new rock music and pop culture website, has just published a re-appraisal/appreciation of Lush for the 20th anniversary of the Mad Love EP, with quotes from Miki and Phil.
March 2010 Spin Magazine's cover story "Where are they Now" which includes Lush on the cover, features a small section on Miki Berenyi in which she talks about the transition from being in a band to an office job.
Dec. 13, 2009 The German label Edition 59 is re-issuing a hard-to-find 1987 single by Apple Boutique, a band which featured Phil King on vocals. Only 59 numbered copies on 3" CD singles will be issued, on January 10, 2010, reviewed at Uncut magazine.
June 23, 2009 The music video game Rock Band 2 has added Sweetness and Light as a downloadable song. That's the second Lush song on RB2, both written by Emma.
Jan. 15, 2009 Great news: Seinking Ships has released some new songs from their upcoming long-awaited LP on MySpace, including two tracks with Miki Berenyi on vocals (You Didn't Love Me and Digging His Own Hole). The new songs are great and Miki sounds fantastic, as if a day hasn’t gone by since Lush. She's still got it!
Sep. 14, 2008 The music video game Rock Band 2, which includes De-Luxe, is released in North America for the Xbox 360. Release on the Wii, PS2 and PS3 is scheduled for later this year. The original Rock Band game sold several million copies.
Aug. 15, 2008 An update from Seinking Ships on their debut LP, for which Miki recorded vocals more than a year ago:
"The album is recorded and sounds great. We are working out the details with the lab."
July 3, 2008 Phil has done an excellent and very in-depth new interview for the VPME Music Blog
June 20, 2008 Emma has done an excellent new interview for the VPME Music Blog.
April 1, 2008 Miki Berenyi has kindly offered to contribute her reminiscences of touring with Lush to this website, in the new Miki's Reminiscences page. Her accounts are an essential part of Lush's history, and in typical Miki fashion they are honest, fair, eloquent, personal, humorous, and just plain great reading!
Feb. 2008
(mid-month)
Miki, Emma and Phil meet at 4AD's offices to discuss Lush reissues! Nothing is official or certain at all, and its unknown if this will be the "box set" that has been talked about for years, but it does sound very likely that something will happen. And just the idea of Miki, Emma and Phil all getting together for a meeting at 4AD is very exciting!
Jan. 25, 2008 Miki has done a new interview for the VPME Music Blog. She answers many more long-standing questions. And once again her honesty, eloquence and humor shine through. This superb interview is a must-read for all fans of Lush. And there's a second part coming next week... Update: Part 2 of the interview is now available, with many never-before-seen Lush photos from Miki's personal collection, including her commentary for each one. Update: Part 3 of the interview is now available, with more photos from Miki's personal collection.
Jan. 22, 2008 This website is launched. See the Site News page for details.
Jan. 2, 2008 Major Event: Sadly, Emma and Lisa announce that after 10 years of Sing-Sing they have decided to "call it a day." It seems their personal situations (parenthood, geography, careers, etc) make it difficult to keep Sing-Sing going. However they added this hopeful note: "Emma has some plans regarding her next move.....2008 might have something very exciting in store." The full announcement is available here.
Dec. 14, 2007 Miki lists her favorite Christmas songs for the VPME Music Blog, and its a very cool list indeed! In typical Miki fashion, she is kind enough to include some personal background on each song.
Oct. 28, 2007 Major Event: After 10 years of silence Miki grants her first interview, to the excellent US-based music publication Under the Radar. Her eloquent, honest, dead-on responses answer many questions Lush fans have been asking for years. Its an absolutely brilliant interview.
Oct. 11, 2007 Development of this website starts. See the Site News page for details.
June 15, 2007 On this day, Miki went into the studio for the first time in several years to record vocals for 3 songs for the debut LP of the Eric Matthews and Christopher Seink project Seinking Ships, due out in 2008.
Update: Word is, the recording session went wonderfully (Miki's still got it!) and the songs are being mixed.
April 26, 2007 Phil goes on tour with the reunited Jesus and Mary Chain, including Coachella and The David Letterman Show on NBC TV.
April 21, 2005 Resonance 104.4 FM in London broadcasts an interview with Emma on Full Circle with Mark Brady, while she was still in Sing-Sing. Emma talks about herSunbathing demo (which became a B-Side on the Sweetness and Light EP), and the early days of Lush.
February 1998 NME: "LUSH have announced their permanent split after nearly a year-and-a-half of inactivity following the suicide of drummer Chris Acland"

Reunion News from the band's official website (2015-2016):

This archive of official band announcements presents a good picture of how the reunion played out in public, over time.

Event announcements appear in the order they were posted by the band (oldest at the bottom), not chronologicaly - some announcements were made far more in advance than others, some shows were rescheduled, and shows were being added while the runion was ongoing.

This is an exact copy of the announcements from the band's official website. They are archived here in case the band website is ever taken down. Everything here is verbatim, with nothing changed from the original and with all links left intact.

[fan reaction to this news]

BAND STATEMENT

It’s been a fantastic year for Lush. We received an incredible reception to our Blind Spot EP and the three beautiful career-spanning 4AD releases, sold out two Roundhouse shows, toured North America with great success and had a ball at our European festival appearances. It’s been wonderful to revisit our old music and to create new material.

However, it is now time for us to return to our families and homes, and bring our time together as a band to a close. We offer heartfelt thanks to all our fans – this reunion would never have happened without your overwhelming support and dedication.

We would like to take this opportunity to announce that, for our last-ever performance at Manchester Academy on November 25th, Emma, Miki and Justin will be joined by former 4AD label mate Michael Conroy, bass player for Modern English. As with Justin’s involvement, Michael playing with Lush has a special significance for us as he was a very close friend of Chris’s.

November 7, 2016

[Note: Although this announcement is worded as if it came from the band, it is in fact for a release from an unrelated label, not the band’s own Edamame Records. Also, since KCRW is a public radio station, its broadcasts are freely available for re-distribution.]

GREEN MAN FESTIVAL

This Friday, 19th August, we are heading to Green Man Festival in the Brecon Beacons to headline the Far Out stage.

"Lush return from a 20-year hiatus (20 years too long in our opinion!) to play GM16. Their haze-filtered, bittersweet grooves will be transporting us all away to blissful harmony in Far Out.

Always one of the most interesting bands in the original unrolling of the shoegaze genre, the pioneering Lush formed in London in the eighties. Reuniting at the end of 2015, the band’s comeback shows were expectedly brilliant. This reformation is a decisively thrilling new chapter in its own right, and we're bowled over to have 'em at blooming last."

If you're heading to the festival, you can get in the mood by listening to the Green Man Playlist on Spotify here.

CHORUS - THE LUSH RETROSPECTIVE

Following on from the news that Lush are to reform next year, we're proud to formally announce the full details of the band’s extensive anthology, Chorus.

Over the course of a decade, Lush released three studio albums – Spooky (1992), Split (1994) and Lovelife (1996) – to growing critical and commercial success. Starting out with the mini-album Scar (1989) and releasing a string of singles and EPs throughout their career, these were used to create the compilations Gala (1990) and Topolino (1996); two albums that would ultimately bookend their story with the tragic death of drummer Chris Acland in late-1996 leaving them too grief-stricken to continue.

Twenty years on and Lush are a band long overdue celebration. Compiled by the band, Chorus will be spread over five CDs and housed in a beautiful hardbound book, designed by long-time associate and former v23 collaborator Chris Bigg.

105 tracks in total, Chorus contains their three studio albums and both singles compilations plus a wealth of previously unreleased demos, radio sessions, remixes and rarities.

The full tracklisting can be found here.

Out on December 4th, Chorus is available to pre-order now. You can get your copy from here.

REUNION ANNOUNCEMENT

We’ve been away for ages and ages, but we’re really excited to announce that we’re finally ready to reform as Lush. For all the fans who have been pestering us to do this: thanks so much for your patience and support! We wish it could have been sooner but, for many years, it was just too painful to contemplate without Chris, and then all kinds of life-changing commitments made it impossible. Now, at last, the three of us are in the right place at the right time to play music together again.

To celebrate our return, 4AD will be putting out a vinyl edition of our ‘best of’ compilation Ciao! (limited copies will be coloured red) and a box set of (very nearly) everything we ever released along with a selection of rarities, sessions and demos. We'll be playing the Roundhouse in London on 6 May 2016 – tickets will go on sale at 9am on 30 September – so you've got plenty of time to regrow your shoey fringe. Chris' old friend from back in the day, Justin Welch (Elastica), will be on drums. There’s more information to come, so please keep in touch…

Lots of love, Miki, Emma and Phil
